The horizontal twistlock couples two containers through the side apertures of adjacent ISO 1161 corner castings. Each cone head enters a side aperture and turning the lever locks both heads, so the two containers are held together as one unit. Two units couple two containers end to end, for example two 20 ft containers into a single 40 ft unit; four are recommended for a rigid side-by-side configuration. The horizontal twistlock is rated in tension. It is also available with a flanged end plate, for fixing structures to the corner casting, and with a D-ring, for connecting lashing and rigging.
