Double Ended Twistlocks are the fundamental twistlocks used to stack lock shipping containers together vertically. There have many adaptations to the original manual double ended twistlock, but the fundamental operation has remained the same in that a lever is used to rotate the centre section of the twistlock to lock the containers together.

Double ended twistlocks are available in either Left hand or Right-hand configurations where the orientation of the handle and the operation is opposite. Right-handed double ended twistlocks are normally readily available, left handed twistlocks can be arranged, however the lead time is considerably longer as they may need to be ordered from the factory directly.

The standard double ended twistlock is a 3-position unit, which stems from the operational requirements when these units were used for the loading and securing of containers on ships. Refer to operation section for details.

A general note that double ended twistlocks are a rattle fit (±1.5mm tolerance) in all 3 directions (X, Y, Z), which is in line with the manufacturing tolerances allowed for corner castings in accordance to ISO 1161.

The user will have the possibility to install these units upside-down into the top corner castings of the bottom container and once the next container has been landed, the twistlocks can be locked.

The handles can be facing inwards, towards the containers or outwards, with the handles facing outwards.

The many variations available in the market, however, it is recommended that they be bought in sets of 4 to ensure that the centre plate thickness is equal on all 4 corners, once installed.

You may notice that one some of the spear heads there is a hole. This hole allows for the use of security mechanisms that can be used to keep the twistlock in the locked position.
