Corner Casting Setout
The ISO 1161 corner-casting positions that every twistlock, socket and lifting point on this site is built around.
Twistlock centres for 10 ft, 20 ft and 40 ft containers — the four points every foundation, trailer bed, plinth or steel frame is set out to.
- 10 ft (1D): longitudinal centres 2 788 mm, transverse centres 2 260 mm
- 20 ft (1CC / 1C): longitudinal centres 5 855 mm, transverse centres 2 260 mm
- 40 ft (1AA / 1A): longitudinal centres 11 989 mm, transverse centres 2 260 mm
- Gap between abutting containers: 279 mm
Always check these dimensions against the actual container to be used. Containers vary by manufacturer, age and repair history, and an individual unit may differ from the figures shown — set out a trial position and confirm the fit before fixing anything permanently.
Two shorter containers occupy the same footprint as one longer one, so a single setout serves both: two 10 ft units sit within a 20 ft setout, and two 20 ft units within a 40 ft setout, with the four outer twistlocks common to both arrangements. Setting a foundation out to the combined dimensions means the same fixing points accept either arrangement later — two short containers now, one long one after a site change, with no new holes drilled and no twistlocks moved. The 279 mm gap between abutting containers is what makes the two setouts coincide.
